|1 “When We Were Young” – Adele|
Not only was eyeliner invented by Adele, she perfected the art of the tune that was sad. “You still look like a movie. You sound like a song. My God, this reminds me of when we were young”. Excuse me while I wipe a tear away.
2 “Beyond” – Leon Bridges This song is so sweet. The music video is sweet. Leon Bridges is sweet. Everything about this song is sweet. “Beyond” is all about dating someone and feeling that emotion of knowing that it is beyond any other feeling you’ve felt for someone earlier.
3 “I’m On Fire” – Chromatics
I am a fan of the first version by Bruce Springsteen, but something about hearing it from Chromatics’ view gives a whole new meaning to the song.
4 “Somebody Else” – The 1975
“I really don’t want your body, but I hate to think about you with somebody else. Our love has gone cold. You are intertwining your spirit with someone else”. A lyric like no other.
5 “Homesick” – Dua lipa Home isn’t a place but an individual at the Dua Lipa song “Homesick”, sung together with Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin. Known for catchy pop songs like her new song, “Don’t Start Now”, Lipa reminds us the best sad songs start with vocals.
6 “How Will I Know” – Sam Smith
Sam Smith’s cover of this iconic Whitney Houston song “How Will I Know” makes you feel so many things you didn’t know you could have. Covers pay respect but the song is given a new light by Smith.
7 “From The Dining Table” – Harry Styles
This tune is so intimate I feel guilty listening to it. “Why won’t you say what you would like to say? My telephone misses your phone, by the way”. To get a listen, I suggest using headphones.
8 “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” – Cigarettes After Sex
“Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby” is just one of those songs that could transport you to somewhere else in an instant. I can’t decide whether the YouTube remark section of this video or the song is heartwarming.
9 “Dancing To ILYSB” – Paul Klein’s The acoustic version of LANY’s breakout hit tune, “ILYSB”, lets you take in Paul Klein’s lyrics of loving someone so much it hurts. No pain, no gain?
10 “Today” – August Alsina Whether the bass line or the solo is the best aspect of this song, I can’t decide. “Today” reminds us why the Haim sisters are among the greatest bands of the decade. I would recommend listening to it for an hour for the effect.
11 “Wonderful Tonight” – Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton understood what he was doing when he wrote this tune. It is my designated “first dance at my wedding” tune regardless of the fact I am very much single. “I feel wonderful because I see the love light in your eyes and the wonder of it all is that you just don’t realize how much I adore you”.
12 “Swoon” – The Chemical Brothers 13 “Dancing on My Own” – Calum Scott
14 “Slow Burn” – Kacey Musgraves
Golden Hour might have won four Grammys, but “Slow Burn” warrants 100 more–for each tear I’ve shed listening to it and allowing myself to process my emotions.
15 “Be Alright” – Dean Lewis
Heartthrob Dean Lewis gave us the perfect excuse to let go. Reminder: It’ll be alright.
16 “You Say” – Lauren Daigle
Lauren Daigle’s “You Say” is profoundly emotional if you are struggling with feelings of self-doubt :”You say I’m loved when I cannot feel a thing / You say I am strong when I believe I’m weak / You say I’m held when I’m falling short.”
17 “I Will Never Love Again” – Lady Gaga
Even if you did not see A Star Is Born, you may infer the psychological complexities of the tune from the name.
18 “Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me To Have, But I Have It” – Lana Del Rey
A songs list can’t be created by you . . .or five. “Hope Is A Dangerous Thing For A Woman Like Me To Have” was among the first singles from her forthcoming album, Norman F*cking Rockwell–a heartbreakingly lovely reminder that sometimes hope is all we have.
19 “The Scientist” – Coldplay
Officially drafting a request to classify “Coldplay” as the Original Sad Song™ from the dictionary.
20 “Past Life” – Maggie Rogers
Maggie Rogers ‘”Past Life” is a far departure from other tunes like “Falling water” and “On + Off” on her new album, Heard It in a Past
Life, which might be what makes it so amazing. It’s a very clear reflection of who she was, and that she is getting –something we should all make room for each and every once and a while.
21 “Palace” – Sam Smith Cam’s cover of Sam Smith’s “Palace” (which she initially composed, btw) is a heartbreakingly mature tribute to an ex-lover who she clearly still enjoys. “And I’m gonna miss you / And I am still there / Sometimes I wish we never built this palace / But real love is never a waste of time.”
22 “Self Care” – Mac Miller
Mac Miller’s tragic death at 26 remains fresh in our heads. It appears appropriate to just sit quietly and listen to this tune when reflecting on his life. Call it self-care.
23 “I Can Feel a Hot One” – Manchester Orchestra
Manchester Orchestra’s 2009 tune wins the rip-your-heart-out award each time you listen to it with its harrowing instrumentals along with the lyrics to go along with them.
24 “Hallucinations” – dvsn

26 “Heartbreak Warfare” – John Mayer
27 “Call Out My Name” – The Weeknd
When he states,”I cut a bit of myself to your life / Guess I was just a different pit stop /’Til you made up your mind / You just wasted my
